What customers say

4.4
Across 11,600+ reviews on Google and the MySyara app

They are very professional, took my car and returned it back on time, they checked all the mechanical aspects of the car and advised on some replacements. Mr. Mohammad Saheer was the adviser, he was so helpful.

One of the finest services I have seen from a car garage. They are so professional. Amazing work, thank you so much.

Loved every single bit. Right from the pick up to drop off, everything was well coordinated and handled professionally. I would recommend everyone to give their service a go.

A minor service is AED 650 and a major service AED 1250, which are tier-2 SUV rates. A power transfer unit oil change is from AED 375, gearbox fluid from AED 400 or AED 600 with the filter, a radiator flush AED 225, wheel alignment AED 200 and spark plugs AED 225.
On all-wheel-drive Explorers the power transfer unit, or PTU, sits bolted to the transaxle and sends drive to the rear wheels. It holds a small amount of fluid, runs hot, and for years was widely treated as sealed for life, so a great many were never serviced. That is the problem. The fluid degrades with heat, and on this layout the PTU shares a seal interface with the transmission, so a neglected PTU is one of the recognised ways a relatively small component can lead to a far larger repair. Changing the fluid is inexpensive insurance, which is why we check it.
On an all-wheel-drive Explorer it is worth having looked at rather than ignoring. A noise that tracks road speed rather than engine revs points at the driveline, and on this vehicle the PTU and the rear drive components are the usual candidates. It does not always mean a failure, but it is the sort of symptom best investigated while the fix is still fluid and a bearing rather than a unit. Mention it when you book so we listen for it specifically.
The naturally aspirated 3.5 V6 shares the engine family in which the water pump sits behind the front timing cover, driven by the timing chain, so failed seals can route coolant toward the oil rather than onto the ground. Our Ford Edge pages cover that failure in full. On the Explorer we record the coolant level at every visit and inspect the oil condition for the same reason, and the EcoBoost and hybrid engines have their own cooling layouts that we inspect accordingly. Tell us the engine so we check the right thing.
Mobil fully synthetic engine oil, an oil filter replacement, air and cabin filter cleaning, all fluids topped up, a multi-point inspection, the coolant level recorded, oil condition inspected and on AWD models the power transfer unit checked. Usually back the same day with a 6 month service warranty.
Every 5,000 to 10,000 km or 6 months, whichever comes first, and we would use the shorter end here. This is a heavy three-row SUV that spends time idling in 45ยฐC traffic, which is when a cooling system has the least airflow to shed heat, when the oil works hardest, and when the driveline fluids take the most punishment.
Yes, provided the oil meets the right specification, the parts are genuine or quality-equivalent, the schedule is kept and the work is recorded. On an Explorer we would add two things worth keeping: the coolant level readings and a note of when the power transfer unit fluid was last changed. Both are exactly what a careful buyer should want to see, and most sellers will not have them.

The driveline part most Explorer owners have never serviced

Most of this service is what you would expect: oil, filters, fluids, brakes, tyres, a proper inspection. Useful, unremarkable.

On an all-wheel-drive Explorer there is one extra check that earns its place, and it takes almost no time.

It is the power transfer unit, the PTU.

Here is what it is. On the all-wheel-drive layout used across the 2011 to 2019 Explorers, drive reaches the rear wheels through a small unit bolted to the side of the transaxle. It holds only a modest amount of fluid, it sits in a hot part of the engine bay, and for years it was widely regarded as sealed for life.

That last point is the whole problem. A part nobody is told to service is a part nobody services.

The fluid in the PTU degrades with heat, and Dubai supplies heat in quantity. As it breaks down it stops protecting the bearings and seals inside the unit. The early warning is usually a whine that rises with road speed rather than with engine revs.

What makes this worth a paragraph rather than a footnote is where the unit sits. The PTU shares a seal interface with the transmission, so a neglected PTU is one of the recognised ways a relatively small, cheap component can lead toward a far larger repair. That is the cascade worth heading off.

Which is why we treat it as a serviceable item

A power transfer unit oil change is from AED 375. Against what it protects, that is inexpensive insurance, and it is the single most Explorer-specific thing on this page.

So we check it as part of an all-wheel-drive Explorer service rather than assuming the factory fluid is fine forever. If the fluid is dark and tired we will tell you, show you, and quote the change before doing anything. If it is fine, you will hear that too.

Tell us when you book whether yours is all-wheel drive, because a front-wheel-drive Explorer does not have this unit and the check does not apply.

The water pump, which the Edge pages own

There is a second cooling concern worth naming, briefly, because it belongs to the engine family rather than the model.

The naturally aspirated 3.5 V6 is part of the engine range in which the water pump sits behind the front timing cover, driven by the timing chain. When its seals fail, coolant can travel toward the engine oil rather than onto the ground, which turns the oil a milky brown and does real damage.

Our Ford Edge pages explain that failure in full, because the Edge made it well known in the UAE. On the Explorer the practical response is the same and it costs nothing: we record the coolant level at every visit so a slow loss shows up as a trend, and we inspect the oil condition rather than only its level.

The EcoBoost turbocharged engines and the 2020-onward hybrid have their own cooling layouts, which is the other reason we ask which engine you have rather than treating every Explorer the same.

Tier 2, and what the service covers

A minor service is AED 650 and a major AED 1250. Tier-2 SUV rates sit above a Japanese crossover and well below the German tier-3 cars.

The minor service: Mobil fully synthetic oil, a new oil filter, cleaning of the air and cabin filters, all fluids topped up, a multi-point inspection, the coolant level recorded, the oil condition inspected, and on all-wheel-drive models the power transfer unit checked.

A major service replaces rather than cleans: air filter, cabin filter, spark plugs and wiper blades. AED 1250.

On the interval, the shorter end is usually right. This is a heavy three-row SUV that spends time idling in 45ยฐC traffic, which is precisely when a cooling system has the least airflow available, when the oil is working hardest, and when the driveline fluids take the most heat.

The two generations are different vehicles underneath

It is worth knowing which Explorer you have, because the mechanical layout changed completely.

The 2011 to 2019 Explorer is a transverse, front-wheel-drive-based platform, with the power transfer unit described above on all-wheel-drive versions. This is the generation where the PTU and the V6 cooling layout are the items to keep in mind.

The 2020-onward Explorer returned to a rear-wheel-drive-based layout with a longitudinal engine and a ten-speed automatic, so its driveline behaves differently and its service needs shift accordingly.

Telling us the year takes a second and means we inspect the vehicle you actually own rather than a generic Explorer.

The fluids that fall off the schedule

Two things that quietly drop off once a vehicle leaves the dealer network, both cheap relative to what they protect.

Gearbox fluid, from AED 400 or AED 600 with the filter. If you have noticed any shudder or hesitation during gear changes, mention it, because that belongs on the repair page rather than being written off as character.

Power transfer unit oil from AED 375 on all-wheel-drive models, for the reasons set out above. Of everything on this list, it is the item most likely to have never been touched.

Coolant condition is checked every visit and a flush is AED 225, which on this vehicle is among the better value items on the list.

One note on resale

Keep two things alongside the service stamps: the coolant level readings and a note of when the PTU fluid was last changed.

On an Explorer those are the two records that speak to the failures that actually cost money, and almost no private seller will have them. A documented history that shows the coolant held steady and the driveline fluid was maintained is exactly what a careful buyer should ask for.

Anything the inspection finds comes with a price. If it is a repair rather than maintenance, it is quoted separately and you decide.
