How it works

From symptom to answer in three steps

Tell us what you have noticed, we establish the cause, you approve before work starts.

01

Describe what you have noticed

An exhaust smell, a whine that rises with speed, a shudder on gear changes, a warning light. The more specific you are, the faster we get to the cause.

02

We establish the cause

Diagnosis starts at AED 99. For an exhaust odour that means checking sealing, vents and the exhaust itself rather than reaching for an air freshener.

Root cause
03

We repair it, you approve

Cooling, PTU, gearbox, AC, suspension: whatever the diagnosis points to is done only with your say-so, and we will tell you honestly if the vehicle is past economic repair.

Tier-2 SUV rates. A diagnosis is AED 99, a radiator flush AED 225, a thermostat AED 450 and a radiator AED 1125. A power transfer unit oil change is from AED 375, gearbox fluid from AED 400 or AED 600 with the filter, and a transfer case oil change from AED 375. An AC condenser is from AED 750, a compressor from AED 1150 and a blower motor AED 450. Sway bar end links are AED 250, rear shock absorbers from AED 725, front from AED 925 and a front lower control arm AED 1075. The water pump and exhaust sealing are quoted after inspection.
An exhaust odour inside the cabin is a recognised concern on some 2011 to 2017 Explorers. It was the subject of a documented investigation by the US safety regulator and a Ford customer satisfaction programme, and the reported causes centred on body and exhaust sealing, with many of the more serious cases linked to modified fleet and police vehicles rather than standard ones. We are not going to tell you what is or is not wrong with your specific car from a description. What we will do is inspect it properly, because exhaust gas contains carbon monoxide and that is not a smell to perfume over. Until we have looked, drive with fresh air selected and a window cracked.
We look at the obvious sources and the known ones. The exhaust system itself for leaks at the manifold, joints and mountings. The body sealing at the rear, including the liftgate area and the drain and vent points where fumes can be drawn in, particularly under acceleration or with the climate system on recirculation. And whether any previous work or modification has disturbed a seal. The point of the AED 99 diagnosis is to find the path the smell is taking rather than mask it.
A noise that tracks road speed rather than engine revs points at the driveline. On an all-wheel-drive Explorer the power transfer unit and the rear drive components are the usual suspects, and neglected PTU fluid is a common and inexpensive starting point at from AED 375. We would investigate that order before discussing a unit replacement, because the cheap fix is worth ruling in or out first.
Start with the fluid. A shudder or hesitation on gear changes is a recognised complaint, and degraded transmission fluid is a common and inexpensive cause: a change is from AED 400, or AED 600 with the filter. We would try that before discussing anything internal, because the reverse order means paying for a large repair you may not have needed. If the fluid does not resolve it, we will tell you what we think is going on rather than guessing.
On the naturally aspirated 3.5 V6 the water pump sits behind the front timing cover, driven by the timing chain, so failed seals can route coolant toward the oil. If your oil looks milky brown rather than dark, stop driving and call us, because that is the point where a pump job can become an engine. Our Ford Edge repair page covers that failure in detail. The EcoBoost and hybrid engines have different cooling layouts, so tell us which engine you have.
For the light jobs, yes. Battery replacement and basic diagnostics can come to your address in Dubai through our doorstep mechanic. Cooling work, PTU and gearbox jobs, exhaust sealing and anything needing a lift are done at a workshop in Al Quoz, Umm Ramool or Wadi Al Amardi, with collection available across the city.

Cause found first, then an honest answer on the repair. An exhaust odour is inspected properly, a driveline whine traced, a gearbox shudder tried on fluid first.

Diagnosis first. Quote before any repair. We will tell you if it is past economic repair.

An exhaust smell inside the cabin is not a smell to ignore

Most repair pages open with the dramatic failure. This one opens with something quieter that people are far too willing to live with: a faint exhaust smell inside the cabin.

It is a recognised concern on some 2011 to 2017 Explorers. The smell was the subject of a documented investigation by the US safety regulator and a Ford customer satisfaction programme, and the reported causes centred on body and exhaust sealing, with many of the more serious cases linked to modified fleet and police vehicles rather than standard family ones.

Two things follow from that, and we want to be careful about both.

First, we are not going to tell you what is wrong with your specific car from a description, and neither should anyone else. The honest position is that this needs looking at, not diagnosing over the phone.

Second, exhaust gas contains carbon monoxide, which you cannot rely on your nose to measure. So while most cases turn out to be a sealing path rather than anything dramatic, it is not a smell to perfume over with an air freshener. Until it has been inspected, drive with fresh air selected rather than recirculation, and a window cracked, especially under acceleration.

What we actually check

The point of the AED 99 diagnosis is to find the path the smell is taking, not to mask it.

We look at the exhaust system itself for leaks at the manifold, the joints and the mountings. We look at the body sealing at the rear, including the liftgate area and the drain and vent points where fumes can be drawn into the cabin, which is more likely under acceleration or with the climate system on recirculation. And we look at whether previous work or a modification has disturbed a seal that was fine from the factory.

If we find the path, you get a quote for the sealing or exhaust work before anything is done. If we do not find a fault, we will tell you that too rather than inventing one.

The driveline whine: trace it, do not guess

A different and far more common complaint on the all-wheel-drive Explorer: a whine that rises with road speed rather than with engine revs.

A noise that tracks speed points at the driveline, and on this vehicle the power transfer unit and the rear drive components are the usual candidates. The PTU is a small unit bolted to the transaxle, its fluid degrades with heat, and a great many were never serviced because they were treated as sealed for life.

So the cheap, sensible first move is the fluid. A power transfer unit oil change is from AED 375, and on an Explorer with a developing whine it is worth ruling in or out before anyone discusses a unit replacement. Our service page explains why we treat the PTU as a serviceable item rather than a sealed one.

The gearbox shudder: fluid first

Another symptom where the order of operations saves money.

A shudder or hesitation during gear changes is a recognised complaint on this vehicle. Degraded transmission fluid is a common and inexpensive cause.

A fluid change is from AED 400, or AED 600 with the filter. We would try that before discussing anything internal, because the reverse order means potentially paying for a large repair you did not need. If the fluid does not resolve it, we will tell you what we actually think is happening rather than reaching for the biggest available job.

The water pump, if yours is the 3.5 V6

Worth naming because it is the one failure on this vehicle that is time-sensitive rather than merely expensive.

On the naturally aspirated 3.5 V6, the water pump sits behind the front timing cover, driven by the timing chain. When its seals fail, coolant can travel toward the engine oil rather than onto the ground, turning the oil a milky brown.

If yours looks like that: stop driving and call us. That is the point at which a pump job can become an engine, and every kilometre run with contaminated oil makes it worse. Our Ford Edge repair page covers this failure in full, because the Edge made it well known here.

The EcoBoost and hybrid engines have different cooling layouts, so tell us which engine you have and we check the right thing.

The ordinary repairs, at ordinary tier-2 prices

Air conditioning, where a condenser is from AED 750 and a compressor from AED 1150. We measure pressures and find the leak before refilling anything. Cold air but not much of it is usually a blower motor at AED 450 or a clogged cabin filter, not refrigerant.

Suspension, where sway bar end links at AED 250 are the cheapest repair and the usual answer to a knock over speed bumps. Dampers are from AED 725 rear and AED 925 front, and a front lower control arm AED 1075 where a clunk under braking comes with vague steering.

Cooling, where a radiator flush is AED 225, a thermostat AED 450 and a radiator AED 1125. On a heavy SUV in Dubai heat these are cheap ways to protect the thing that is not cheap.

Brakes, measured in millimetres and reported as numbers, because this is a heavy three-row vehicle and it uses them.

The honest summary

An Explorer is a straightforward vehicle to own, with a short list of things worth knowing: an exhaust smell that deserves a proper look rather than a dismissal, a driveline whose fluid most owners never change, and on the V6 the cooling concern the Edge made famous.

Everything else is ordinary tier-2 work at ordinary tier-2 prices, found before it is quoted.

If what you need is routine servicing rather than a repair, that is AED 650 minor and AED 1250 major, with the coolant level recorded and the power transfer unit checked on all-wheel-drive models.
