The fluids your dashboard will never mention

Most of what a CX-9 service covers is the same everywhere: oil, filters, brakes, a look over the car. The schedule handles it and the warning lights back it up.

On an all-wheel-drive CX-9 there is a part of the car that does none of that for you.

The drive is split front to rear through a transfer unit, and sent to the rear wheels through a rear differential. Both run their own oil, both wear, and neither has a dashboard reminder. No light comes on. No service minder counts them down. They are simply absent from the daily experience of owning the car, which is exactly why they get forgotten, and why a high-distance all-wheel-drive CX-9 often reaches us with original driveline fluid long past its best.

In Abu Dhabi that matters more than almost anywhere, and the reason is distance.

What the transfer case and rear differential actually do

Worth a plain explanation, because these are not parts most owners ever think about.

The transfer case takes drive from the gearbox and apportions it between the front and rear axles. The rear differential takes the drive sent rearward and splits it between the two rear wheels while letting them turn at different speeds through a corner. Both are sets of gears running in a bath of oil, and both rely on that oil keeping its film strength under heat and load.

A transfer case oil change is AED 375. The rear differential fluid has no catalogue rate for this vehicle, so it is quoted after inspection. Neither is an expensive job in isolation. What makes them worth raising is that nothing in the car will ever prompt you to do them, so the decision to look is one you, or we, have to make deliberately.

Why Abu Dhabi distances bring them forward

Driveline fluids do not wear by the calendar. They wear with heat and load, and sustained high-speed driving produces a steady supply of both.

A CX-9 cruising at motorway speed for an hour at a stretch is loading the transfer case and rear differential continuously, not in the short bursts a city car sees. The oil runs hot and stays hot. Over the kind of annual distance an Abu Dhabi owner covers, that adds up faster than the service schedule, written around gentler use, assumes.

There is a second effect. You cover far more distance between services out here than a city driver does. So a driveline fluid that has quietly gone past its best spends longer in that state before anyone inspects it. The failure mode is not dramatic, it is slow, and by the time a differential or transfer case gives a symptom the wear has usually already happened.

That is why we inspect these rather than wait. A fluid you can still rescue is cheap. A worn gearset is not.

The service, and what it covers

AED 425 minor: Mobil fully synthetic oil, a new oil filter, cleaning of the air and cabin filters, all fluids topped up, the coolant level and condition recorded, and on an all-wheel-drive car the driveline fluids inspected rather than assumed to be fine.

AED 900 major, which replaces rather than cleans: air filter, cabin filter, spark plugs and wiper blades.

If yours is front-wheel drive, there is no transfer case and no rear differential, that part of the inspection simply does not apply, and you are not charged for work your car does not have. Tell us the drivetrain when you book and we scope the service to the actual car.

A radiator flush is AED 225, a wheel alignment AED 200, a tyre rotation AED 50, and a general vehicle check AED 150 if you want a judgement on the car before a long trip.

Distance, not date

The interval is every 5,000 to 10,000 km or 6 months, whichever comes first, and on Abu Dhabi distances the kilometres come first.

At 2,500 km a month you reach 10,000 km in four months. Working to the calendar takes the car past its interval without anything feeling different. We use the shorter end of the range anyway, because 45°C heat and a turbo both age oil faster than the temperate-climate figures these intervals were written around.

Coolant, recorded as a trend

Briefly, because it belongs on the repair page in full.

On the 2.5 litre turbo engine we record the coolant level and condition as found at every service, so you have a trend rather than a single reading. A slow, unexplained drop is worth catching early on this engine, and over the long intervals an Abu Dhabi owner runs, a trend caught at the service is often the first warning there is. Between visits, a glance of your own is worth the thirty seconds.

A quick word on the two engines

The CX-9 comes in two quite different forms.

The first generation, roughly 2007 to 2015, uses a Ford-derived V6 whose water pump sits inside the engine, a failure we cover in full on our Ford Edge Abu Dhabi page because the Edge shares the engine family.

The second generation, 2016 onward, uses the 2.5 litre turbo four and has its own cooling points, covered on the CX-9 repair page. Tell us the year when you book so the inspection looks for the right things.

No doorstep here, and no premium either

Our doorstep mechanic runs in Dubai only. In Abu Dhabi the work is workshop-based: Khalifa City, Mussafah, MBZ, Al Raha and out towards Al Shamkha. Most services are same-day, and the driveline work in particular needs the car on a lift.

What you do not pay is any Abu Dhabi surcharge. Every figure on this page matches our Dubai workshops.

Anything the inspection finds comes with a price. If it is a repair rather than maintenance, it is quoted separately and you decide.
