How it works

From symptom to answer in three steps

Tell us what the coolant and gauge are doing, we test before we quote, you approve before work starts.

01

Describe it and give the mileage

Coolant dropping with no puddle, a gauge that creeps up on a long run, a sweet smell, or something else? And how far the car has covered. The symptom narrows the cause before you arrive.

02

We test before we quote

A pressure test finds where the coolant is going rather than assuming. On the cooling system that is the whole job: guessing here is how owners pay for the wrong part.

Root cause
03

We repair it, you approve

Cooling, gearbox, AC, suspension: whatever the test points to is done only with your say-so, and we will tell you if it is past economic repair.

Mazda CX-9 repair in Abu Dhabi, answered

Topping up coolant often? That is a test, not a routine.

The same as our Dubai workshops, with no Abu Dhabi premium. A diagnosis including a pressure test is AED 99, a radiator flush AED 225, a thermostat AED 325 and a radiator AED 825. Water-pump and cylinder-head work are quoted after inspection. A gearbox fluid change is AED 275, or AED 425 with the filter, and a transfer case oil change AED 375. An AC condenser is from AED 575, a compressor from AED 850 and a blower motor AED 300. Sway bar end links are AED 175, rear shock absorbers from AED 575 and front from AED 700.
It is worth a pressure test rather than repeated topping up. On the 2.5 litre turbo fitted from 2016, owners have reported coolant disappearing with no external leak, and Mazda itself published bulletin 01-002/23 in February 2023 describing coolant leaking at the cylinder head around the exhaust manifold. Mazda extended the powertrain warranty to 10 years or 120,000 miles under programme CSP11 to repair qualifying cars at no cost, a programme published for the United States, so ask Mazda whether your VIN and market qualify before paying anyone. But coolant that vanishes with nothing on the ground has to be going somewhere, and that is the loss we test rather than manage. Out here, where your next workshop is often far away, you do not want to discover where it was going on the road.
Because a visible leak is usually the cheap kind, and out here it is also the kind you can actually catch. A damp hose or a loose clip drips onto the floor and you spot it on the driveway. Coolant that leaves no puddle gives you no such warning, so an Abu Dhabi owner who relies on seeing a leak will not see this one coming. It also has to be going somewhere less ordinary, which on a turbo engine can be an expensive place. That combination, no warning and a potentially serious cause, is why we treat it as the priority.
Stop and let the engine cool before going any further, and do not try to press on to the next town. A rising gauge means the cooling system is no longer shedding heat, and continuing damages the engine through overheating regardless of the underlying cause. Once it has cooled, call us. On a long Abu Dhabi route the distance to the next workshop can be considerable, so an overheat is one of the few things on this car genuinely worth stopping for rather than nursing home.
Partly, and the distinction matters. Mazda has acknowledged coolant leaks at the cylinder head around the exhaust manifold in its own bulletin 01-002/23 and extended the powertrain warranty to 10 years or 120,000 miles under programme CSP11 in the United States. A separate class action alleges more than that, and the extra allegations are not established. Neither means your specific car has the fault, and plenty of CX-9s cover high distances without any cooling trouble at all. When coolant does go missing with no visible leak, the honest response is to pressure-test it and find out, because the cause is often ordinary, a cap, a hose, or a thermostat at AED 325, and we are glad when it is.
No, it is a different one. The first-generation CX-9, roughly 2007 to 2015, uses a Ford-derived V6 whose water pump sits inside the engine, and that failure routes coolant somewhere else entirely. We cover it in full on our Ford Edge Abu Dhabi page, because the Edge shares the engine, and if you run a first-generation car that page is the one to read rather than this section.
No. Every figure on this page matches our Dubai workshops with no Abu Dhabi surcharge. The only difference is that the work is workshop-based here, because the doorstep mechanic service runs in Dubai only. You can reach us from the island, Khalifa City, Mussafah, MBZ, Al Raha and out towards Al Shamkha.

A pressure test that finds where the coolant is going, an honest account of what is known and what is only alleged, and a quote before any repair.

Diagnosis first. Quote before any repair. The invisible loss is tested, not topped up.

The leak you will not see coming

Out here you learn about most leaks the same way: you walk back to the car and there is a stain on the ground where it was parked. A puddle is the warning, and for most faults it is a reliable one.

On the 2.5 litre turbo CX-9, the coolant loss that matters most leaves no puddle at all.

That is the whole problem in a sentence. An Abu Dhabi owner who relies on spotting a leak, which is a sensible habit, will not spot this one. The level drops, the car seems fine for a while, the coolant gets topped up, and the cycle repeats until something more serious announces itself, often on a long road a long way from help.

So this page is not about the leaks you can see. It is about the one you cannot, and why it is the one to test rather than manage.

Why the invisible loss is the serious kind

This runs against instinct, so it is worth stating plainly.

Owners relax about a leak they cannot find and worry about one dripping on the floor. On a cooling system it is the other way round.

A visible leak is usually the cheap kind. A weeping hose, a tired clip, a seeping cap: you can see it, and it is an inexpensive fix. It is also, out here, the kind you can actually catch before it strands you.

A loss that leaves no puddle has to be going somewhere you cannot see from the driveway. On a turbo engine, some of those places are not cheap. And because it gives you no warning on the ground, an owner who drives long distances between towns has none of the usual early signals. That combination, no warning plus a potentially serious cause, is exactly why we put it at the top.

What we actually do: pressure test, not top-up

The job on a cooling complaint is to find where the coolant is going, and the tool for that is a pressure test, not a refill.

We pressurise the system cold and watch what happens. A leak that shows externally points to the cheap, ordinary causes. A system that holds cold but loses pressure under heat, with no visible leak, points somewhere else and tells us to look harder rather than hand the car back with a top-up.

That is the difference between the AED 99 diagnostic and a forecourt top-up. One finds the cause. The other buys you a few weeks and leaves the cause exactly where it was.

Often the answer is ordinary: a cap, a hose, or a thermostat at AED 325, a radiator flush at AED 225, a radiator at AED 825. We are genuinely glad when it is, and we will tell you plainly when it is. Water-pump and cylinder-head work are quoted after inspection, because the scope depends entirely on what the test shows.

Being straight about what is known

Here we are going to be careful, because overstating this would be as unhelpful as ignoring it.

On the 2.5 litre turbo engine fitted from 2016, a notable number of owners have logged complaints about coolant loss with no external leak, sometimes progressing to overheating. In the United States this engine family is the subject of a 2024 class action, Jarvis v. Mazda, which alleges a coolant and cylinder-head defect.

What that is: a pattern of owner reports and a lawsuit making an allegation.

What that is not: proof that your particular car has a defect. An allegation in litigation is not an established fault, plenty of CX-9s cover high distances with no cooling trouble at all, and we are not going to look at your car and pronounce a known defect on the strength of a court filing.

So our position is the measured one. We take an invisible coolant loss on this engine seriously, we test it properly, and we tell you what we actually find rather than what a lawsuit alleges. That is the honest middle between alarm and dismissal.

If the gauge climbs, stop

One instruction that overrides everything else on this page.

If the temperature gauge is rising on a long run, pull over and let the engine cool before going on. A climbing gauge means the cooling system is no longer shedding heat, and continuing will damage the engine through overheating whatever the underlying cause. On an Abu Dhabi route the next workshop can be a long way off, and an engine run hot repeatedly is in a bracket of its own. Let it cool, then call.

The older V6 is a different story

If yours is a first-generation CX-9, roughly 2007 to 2015, the cooling conversation is not this one.

That car uses a Ford-derived V6 whose water pump sits inside the engine, a failure that routes coolant somewhere else entirely and carries its own warning signs. We cover it in full on our Ford Edge Abu Dhabi page, because the Edge shares the engine. Run a first-generation car and that is the page to read.

The gearbox, which is the cheaper conversation

Separate from the cooling story, and usually far less alarming.

The CX-9 uses a conventional six-speed automatic, not a CVT. A car that has started shifting harshly or late most often wants clean fluid and an adaptation relearn, not internals. We scan it, change the fluid at AED 275, or AED 425 with the filter, reset the adaptation, and only discuss anything internal if the behaviour survives that. A rebuild quoted before the fluid has been changed has skipped the cheap step. The Dubai repair page goes into this in full.

Air conditioning on a long summer drive

Treat a failed air conditioner here as a safety item, not a comfort one. A cabin at 45ยฐC becomes genuinely unpleasant within minutes and unsafe over a long drive, more so with children or elderly passengers.

An inspection is AED 99 and we measure pressures rather than guessing: a condenser from AED 575, a compressor from AED 850, a top-up at AED 150 only where the system genuinely holds pressure. Cold air but not much of it is airflow, not refrigerant: a blower motor at AED 300 or a cabin filter choked with dust.

What sustained speed consumes

On a heavy seven-seater covering long distances, the wear items are the familiar ones.

Sway bar end links at AED 175 for a knock over bumps, shock absorbers from AED 575 rear and AED 700 front where the ride turns floaty or a tyre wears unevenly, and alignment at AED 200, which at constant motorway speed produces almost no symptom through the wheel while quietly destroying one edge of a tyre.

No premium, and no doorstep

Every figure on this page matches our Dubai workshops. There is no Abu Dhabi surcharge on any job.

The doorstep mechanic runs in Dubai only, so cooling, gearbox and driveline work is workshop-based here: Khalifa City, Mussafah, MBZ, Al Raha and out towards Al Shamkha.

If what you need is routine servicing rather than a repair, that is AED 425 minor and AED 900 major, and worth reading for the driveline fluids a long-distance all-wheel-drive car quietly wears.
