A Land Rover rewards early attention more than most cars

Range Rovers are the most capable and most comfortable thing many people will ever own, and they are also the cars where deferred maintenance costs the most. That is not a reputation problem, it is a design consequence: these are complex vehicles with air suspension, sophisticated cooling and a great deal of electronics, all operating in 45°C heat.

The practical upshot is that a Land Rover service is worth more than its parts list. The oil and filter are routine. The value is in the inspection, specifically the two systems where small problems become large ones fastest: the air suspension and the cooling system.

Air suspension: the check that pays for itself

On an air-sprung Range Rover, Sport or Discovery, the suspension is the system most likely to produce a four-figure bill, and the early warnings are quiet ones. A car that settles a little overnight. A compressor that runs longer than it used to when you start up. A ride height that is marginally off on one corner.

None of those strand you. All of them are cheaper to deal with at that stage than after an air spring splits or a compressor burns out trying to keep up with a leak. So ride height and compressor behaviour are part of every service we do on these cars, and anything found is quoted properly rather than estimated.

We deliberately do not publish a fixed air suspension price. The same symptom can mean a tired compressor, a split airbag, a leaking valve block or a failed height sensor, and those are very different jobs. Inspecting first and quoting the real work is more honest than advertising a number.

Cooling: heat plus complexity

The second area is coolant. These engines run sophisticated cooling systems with plenty of plastic, and sustained UAE heat is unkind to both. Coolant condition, level and any sign of seepage get checked at every service rather than every third, for the same reason as the suspension: finding it early is the cheap version.

Minor or major: which one is due

A minor service is the routine one, due every 5,000 to 10,000 km or 6 months. It covers Mobil fully synthetic oil, a new oil filter, cleaning of the air and cabin filters, all fluids topped up, a fault-code scan and the inspection described above.

A major service is typically every third service, around 30,000 to 40,000 km or every two years, and replaces rather than cleans: air filter, cabin filter, spark plugs and wiper blades.

Almost every Land Rover prices at our SUV rate, so a minor is AED 800 and a major AED 1500 across the range.

Two fluids worth asking about

If your Land Rover has covered real distance, ask about the gearbox fluid, from AED 550, and the transfer case oil, from AED 475. Both are straightforward, both are cheap relative to the car, and both are the sort of item that quietly falls off the schedule once a vehicle leaves the dealer network.

Anything the inspection or the scan turns up is quoted for your approval, and if it is a repair rather than maintenance it is priced separately.
