In Abu Dhabi, a Land Rover actually gets used

Plenty of Range Rovers in this country never leave tarmac. In Abu Dhabi a good many of them do, and that changes what a service should look at. Add the long motorway distances the emirate produces and you have a vehicle doing exactly what it was engineered for, with the wear to match.

Two things follow. Kilometres arrive before the calendar does, so a “10,000 km or 6 months” interval almost always resolves on distance. And sand becomes a genuine maintenance variable rather than a cosmetic one.

Sand and air suspension

Air springs rely on seals, and the compressor that feeds them draws air from somewhere. Fine sand is unkind to both. On a car that sees dunes or graded tracks, the suspension deserves a closer inspection than it would on a school-run Evoque: ride height on each corner, how long the compressor runs at startup, and any sign that the car settles when parked overnight.

None of those symptoms will strand you. All of them are considerably cheaper to address at that stage than after an air spring splits or a compressor burns out trying to keep up with a leak it cannot win against. That is why the check is part of every service we do on these cars, and why we quote any work found rather than estimating it.

We deliberately do not publish a fixed air suspension price. A car sitting low can mean a tired compressor, a split airbag, a leaking valve block or a faulty height sensor. Those are very different jobs, and quoting the real one after inspection is more honest than advertising a number.

Air filtration is the cheap item that matters

The second desert consequence is the air filter. Sand loads a filter far faster than road driving, and a restricted filter costs power and fuel long before it costs anything worse.

On a car that goes off-road regularly, treat the air filter as a check-every-service item rather than a replace-at-major one. Tell us when you book that the car sees sand and we will look at it on that basis, along with the underbody for knocks from graded tracks.

Minor or major: which one is due

A minor service is the routine one, every 5,000 to 10,000 km or 6 months, covering Mobil fully synthetic oil, a new oil filter, filter cleaning, all fluids topped up, a fault-code scan and the inspection above.

A major service is typically every third service, around 30,000 to 40,000 km or every two years, and replaces rather than cleans: air filter, cabin filter, spark plugs and wiper blades. Given Abu Dhabi mileage the major usually arrives on kilometres rather than years.

Two fluids worth asking about

On a car with real distance behind it, ask about the gearbox fluid, from AED 550, and the transfer case oil, from AED 475. On a Land Rover that does low-range work the transfer case has earned its fluid change rather more than on a road-only SUV.

Anything the inspection or the scan turns up is quoted for your approval, and if it is a repair rather than maintenance it is priced separately.
