One symptom, four prices

The most common reason a Range Rover comes to us is that it is sitting low, or a suspension warning has appeared on the dash. It is also the clearest example in this market of why diagnosis before quoting matters.

A car sitting low can mean a height sensor has failed, which is the cheapest outcome and sometimes surprisingly minor. It can mean the valve block is leaking. It can mean an air spring has split, which is the failure most owners assume. Or it can mean the compressor has burnt out, usually because it spent months trying to keep up with a leak that nobody fixed.

Four causes, one symptom, and a very wide spread of cost. Any workshop that quotes you a figure over the phone is guessing, and the guess will be either optimistic or expensive. We charge AED 99 to check ride height on each corner, read the stored codes and tell you which of the four you are actually dealing with.

That is also why there is no fixed air suspension price on this page. Publishing one would mislead most people who read it.

The compressor lesson

Worth knowing: the expensive air suspension failure is usually preventable. A compressor is sized to top the system up occasionally, not to run continuously. When a small leak develops somewhere in the system, the compressor starts working much harder to hold the car up, and eventually it fails from the effort.

So the cheap repair, a seal or a sensor or a valve block, becomes the expensive one simply through time. If your car has started settling overnight, or the compressor runs noticeably longer at startup, that is the window where it is still small.

Cooling: stop if the gauge moves

These engines carry sophisticated cooling systems with plenty of plastic components, and 45°C ambient degrades plastic steadily. A flush is AED 225. A radiator is AED 1850. An engine that has been run hot repeatedly is in another category entirely.

Air conditioning and gearbox

AC parts here are expensive: a condenser from AED 1250, a compressor from AED 1875. A condenser choked with fine dust presents exactly like a system low on gas, so finding the leak before refilling is the difference between a modest bill and a large one.

On the gearbox, fluid is the cheap intervention, from AED 625, or AED 950 with a filter. On a car with real mileage, and particularly one that does low-range work, the transfer case oil at AED 550 is worth asking about too.

The honest conversation about older cars

Not every Range Rover is worth repairing, and we will say so. A car with one failed air spring and a decent history is usually a straightforward yes. A car with repeated air failures, a history of overheating and a long list of stored codes is a different proposition, and you deserve that assessment before you spend rather than after.
