Range Rover Evoque Repair ยท Dubai

Range Rover Evoque repair in Dubai, diagnosed for AED 99.

A start-up rattle on an Ingenium Evoque is the one noise you do not wait on. The timing chain was sold as a lifetime part, it sits at the gearbox end of the engine, and the repair bill is dominated by reaching it. If the rattle outlasts the first couple of seconds, we investigate before it becomes an engine-out job. Diagnosis AED 99.

How it works

From symptom to fix in three steps

Tell us what it is doing, we find out why, you approve the quote before work starts.

01

Tell us the year and the noise

When does the rattle happen, on a cold start or at idle, and how long does it last? On an Ingenium Evoque that detail is most of the early diagnosis. Tell us the year too, because the early cars have their own pattern.

A diagnosis is AED 99 and a general check AED 150. The Evoque prices at our tier-3 SUV rate. A radiator flush is AED 225 and a radiator replacement AED 1850. An AC condenser is from AED 1250, a compressor from AED 1875 and a blower motor AED 750. Sway bar end links are AED 400, a front lower control arm AED 1700, rear shocks from AED 1350 and front from AED 1675. Timing chain, turbo and exhaust manifold work is quoted after inspection, because on this engine the cost is dominated by the access.
Worried enough to have it looked at rather than driven on. On the Ingenium engine a distinctive rattle on start-up or at idle is the classic sign of timing chain stretch, and a common specialist rule is that a rattle lasting more than two to three seconds points at the chain. This is a noise after the engine has started and settled, not the time it takes to fire up from cranking, which is a different fault on different cars. The reason not to wait is the repair: the chain sits at the gearbox end of the engine and reaching it is a major job, so catching it early is the difference between a managed repair and an engine-out one.
Because of where it is. On the 2.0 Ingenium the primary chain is mounted at the rear of the engine, against the flywheel, rather than at the accessible front. To reach it on a transverse installation the whole engine and gearbox has to come out, and on a longitudinal layout the transmission has to be removed. The chain parts themselves are not the headline cost. The labour of getting to them is. That is why we quote it after inspection rather than publishing a figure, and why we take an early rattle seriously.
No, and the distinction matters. This is not a plastic guide whining at the front of the engine, and it is not about counting how long the engine cranks before it starts. On the Ingenium it is chain stretch at the flywheel end of the engine, which is a different mechanism, a different noise and a far more involved repair because of the access. We diagnose it as its own thing rather than assuming it is a problem borrowed from another car.
Yes, and it is why the service page matters as much as this one. The Ingenium diesel is prone to oil dilution, where unburnt diesel contaminates the oil, and short cold Dubai trips are the worst case for it. Diluted oil protects less well, and it is lubricating a chain that is already a known weak point. Keeping the oil fresh and the right grade, on a realistic short-trip interval, is the cheapest thing you can do to keep the chain quiet. The detail is on the Evoque service page.
The early Evoques are the ones most commonly flagged. Alongside the timing chain, owners report tensioner failures, turbocharger defects and exhaust manifold cracking. If you own one of these years, a diagnostic is worth doing even without an obvious symptom, because the patterns are known and cheaper to catch early. Tell us the year and we scan and inspect with those faults in mind.
Infotainment faults, screen freezing and connectivity dropping out, are among the most commonly reported Evoque complaints, so you are not alone. It is an irritation rather than a safety or reliability concern, and we will tell you honestly what is a software quirk and what is a repair before you spend anything on it. Bring it up at the diagnostic and we will note what the screen is actually doing.

The one start-up noise you do not wait on

If your Ingenium Evoque rattles when you start it cold, or at idle, that is the noise to act on rather than live with.

The reason is specific to this engine. The timing chain was sold as a lifetime part, which encourages owners to assume it never needs attention. In practice it stretches and wears its guides, and when it does, the warning it gives is exactly that rattle. The common specialist rule of thumb is simple: a rattle that lasts more than two to three seconds points at chain stretch.

What makes this the noise you do not sit on is not the chain itself. It is where the chain lives. It sits at the gearbox end of the engine, and reaching it is a major job. Caught early, it is a planned repair. Left to run, it becomes the engine-out version. The whole argument of this page is that the gap between those two outcomes is time, and the rattle is the clock starting.

Why this chain is a different problem

On most engines the timing chain sits at the front, behind a cover you can reach with the engine in the car. The Ingenium does the opposite.

Here the primary chain is mounted at the rear of the engine, against the flywheel. That single design choice is what turns a chain replacement into one of the most involved jobs the car has. On a transverse engine installation, the entire engine and gearbox has to come out to get at it. On a longitudinal layout, the transmission has to be removed. Either way, you are paying mostly for access, not for a handful of chain components.

That is why we quote this work after inspection rather than putting a number on the page. It is also why an early rattle is worth a AED 99 diagnosis today rather than a much larger bill once the chain has stretched far enough to skip or fail.

To be clear about what this is and is not: this is not a plastic guide whining at the front of the engine, and it is not about counting how many seconds the engine cranks before it fires. That is a cranking symptom on other cars and a different fault entirely. This is chain stretch at the flywheel end, a different mechanism with a far heavier access problem, and we treat it as its own thing.

What the rattle is telling us, and what we check

A rattle on a cold start or at idle, lasting past that first couple of seconds, is the headline sign. When you book, the single most useful thing you can tell us is when it happens and how long it lasts, because that detail is most of the early picture.

At the workshop a diagnosis is AED 99. A technician reads the stored fault codes and assesses the engine on a cold start, which is when the symptom is clearest. If the chain is stretching we will say so plainly and quote the actual work. If the noise is something less serious, we will tell you that too, because not every rattle is the chain and you deserve to know which you are dealing with before anyone talks about pulling an engine.

Oil dilution made it worse

The chain does not wear in isolation. The Ingenium diesel is associated with oil dilution, where unburnt diesel contaminates the engine oil, and the worst case for it is short, cold journeys, the ones that never let the engine get fully hot. That describes most Evoque use in Dubai: the school run, the mall, the short commute.

Diluted oil protects less well than clean oil, and it is lubricating a chain that is already a known weak point. So the condition that is hardest on the oil and the condition that is hardest on the chain are the same condition. The cheapest defence is keeping the oil fresh and correct on a realistic short-trip interval, which is the subject of the Evoque service page. If you are reading this because of a rattle, that page is the other half of the story.

The early 2012 to 2014 cars

If yours is one of the early Evoques, it is worth knowing these years carry the most reported trouble. Beyond the chain, owners of these cars report timing chain tensioner failures, turbocharger defects and exhaust manifold cracking. None of it is a reason to panic, but all of it is a reason to diagnose rather than guess. Tell us the year when you book and we scan and inspect with those known patterns in mind.

Cooling, AC and suspension

Away from the engine, an Evoque in Dubai wears in the ways the climate dictates, and these jobs carry fixed prices.

Cooling runs complex and plastic-heavy, and 45ยฐC ambient is unkind to both. A radiator flush is AED 225 and a radiator replacement AED 1850. If the temperature gauge climbs, stop and have the car recovered rather than pressing on, because a repeatedly overheated engine is in another category of cost. A thermostat on this car is quoted after inspection rather than listed.

Air conditioning parts are not cheap here, which is exactly why we measure before refilling. An AC inspection is AED 99, a gas top-up AED 150, a condenser from AED 1250, a compressor from AED 1875 and a blower motor AED 750. An evaporator is quoted after inspection. A condenser choked with fine dust can present just like a system low on gas, so finding the actual fault first is the difference between a modest bill and a large one.

Suspension starts with the cheapest likely cause, not the dearest. Sway bar end links are AED 400 and usually the right answer to a knock over speed bumps. A front lower control arm is AED 1700. Dampers are from AED 1350 rear and from AED 1675 front if the ride has gone floaty or the tyres are wearing unevenly. On a car with real mileage the gearbox or ATF fluid at AED 625 and the transfer case oil at AED 550 are worth asking about too.

A quick word on the screen

Not every Evoque complaint is mechanical. Infotainment faults, screen freezing and connectivity dropping out, are among the most commonly reported issues on this car. It is an annoyance rather than a reliability worry, and we will tell you honestly what is a software quirk and what is a genuine repair before you spend on it. Mention it at the diagnostic and we will note what the screen is doing.

Why we diagnose first

Everything on this page points the same way. The expensive outcome on an Evoque is the engine-out timing chain job, and the cheap decision that avoids it is acting on the early signs. A AED 99 diagnosis reads the codes, assesses the cold start and tells you whether the rattle is the chain or something smaller, before anyone quotes you for the big version.

If what you need turns out to be routine servicing rather than a repair, that is AED 800 minor and AED 1500 major, and the oil it uses is the best insurance the chain has.
