What are the most common Hyundai problems?

 

Some of the most common issues reported by Hyundai owners include:

  • 2010-2015 Elantra Nu engine problems: including an annoying ticking sound and engine bearing failures

  • ABS problems: short-circuiting modules and water leaking into ABS systems
  • Crash sensor problems: including defective airbag control units (recalls were issued for 2011-13 Sonatas because of this problem)
  • Wiring issues: rodents have been attracted to (and proceeded to eat) soy-based wiring
     

Just the 2011 Hyundai Sonata alone is reported to have the following issues:

  • Engine seizing 
  • Electrical issues
  • Airbag deployment failures
  • Rough idle caused by faulty EGR switch valve

The older Sonata models have experienced engine failures, which led to a class-action lawsuit in 2016. In addition, some models have had issues with shifting gears (2012) and defective lights (2003-2015). More recent Sonata models have reported various issues, including problems with XM satellite antennas and the electrical system. One recall has been issued for the 2022 Sonata due to an issue with the fuel pipe. Despite this, the 2022 model received an excellent reliability rating of 83/100 from JD Power.

In older Elantra models, the most common problem was with airbags, either due to the warning lights turning on and off or accidental deployment. There were also engine problems in some years, particularly in 2013, with some owners reporting the engine seizing. Another issue of concern was the possibility of an electrical short in the ABS module, which could cause fires.
 
However, the 2022 Elantra has received a good reliability rating of 80/100 from JD Power, with few and varied reported problems such as issues with lane assist technology and failure to accelerate properly. Nevertheless, one recall has been issued for the 2022 model due to the seatbelt pretensioner, which has the potential to explode during an accident and send shards of metal into the car’s cabin.

The 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe was reported to have transmission problems, while faulty speakers were a more widespread issue in 2008, 2009, 2011, and 2017 models. Some owners of the 2014 models also reported engine stalling. Despite these problems, the 2022 Santa Fe received a good reliability rating of 81/100 from JD Power. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there were 13 miscellaneous complaints for the 2022 model, three of which relate to the SUV’s electrical system. However, the 2022 Santa Fe has one recall issued for a problem with the oil supply pipe, which may crack.

Acceleration issues were reported in older Hyundai Tucsons, particularly in the 2016-2018 models. Additionally, 2016-2019 models had problems with the collision avoidance system and the blindspot warning system. However, the 2022 Tucson received a great quality and reliability rating of 88 from JD Power. The 2022 model has one recall related to software installed in the integrated central control unit.

The Hyundai Accent faced three primary issues in older models: problems with airbags, transmissions, and issues with their soy-based wiring system, which was attractive to rodents. There have been no safety recalls for the 2022 Accent.

The least reliable Hyundai model: the 2011 Hyundai Sonata

The Hyundai Sonata is a popular commuter car, which may explain the high number of complaints for the 2011 model year, which recorded over 3,000 complaints. This is significantly more than the 329 complaints recorded for the 2010 model year. The sixth generation Sonata received a facelift in 2011, which could be the root cause of the problems with this model year. If you’re looking for a more reliable used car, the 2010 Sonata is considered one of the best years for the Sonata in terms of reliability, with a rating of 87/100 by JD Power. In fact, the 2010 model only had two recalls and 329 complaints, making it a stark contrast to the 2011 model.

The most reliable Hyundai model: the 2018 Hyundai Kona

Most common problem: Isolated
